What is Bamboo yarn?

Bamboo is a great sustainable material because the process of growing bamboo trees does not require much water or agrochemicals like pesticides, fertilizers. The cellulose compound in the Bamboo plant is high, which is ideal for yarn making. The Bamboo plant also contains a natural antibacterial property called ‘bamboo kun’ that can prevent up to 75% of the bacteria.

Fabrics made from bamboo yarn are soft, airy, and even more moisture-absorbent than cotton fabrics. Bamboo fabrics provide good comfortability and are good to wear for outdoor activities, especially in the summertime.

Bamboo yarns vary, some of the most popular ones that Greenyarn offers include:

  • Bamboo Charcoal: a good combination between activated bamboo charcoal and polyester/recycled polyester. Bamboo Charcoal yarn inherits the most outstanding characteristics of activated charcoal and bamboo, including antibacterial, odor control ability, and UV resistance.
  • Bamboo Cotton: a blend of cotton and bamboo, known for its extra airy characteristic. Fabrics made of Bamboo Cotton yarn have good moisture-wicking ability, good antibacterial, and can protect the skin from UV rays.
  • Mélange Bamboo: a bamboo alternative with the mélange effect. Bamboo fibers are top-dyed with the desired colors before spinning, resulting in the yarn having the mélange effect and the dyestuff stays longer on the fabric.

The production process of Bamboo Yarn

Greenyarns’s Bamboo yarns are made following the closed-loop lyocell process, which is a more eco-friendly process comparing to traditional yarn production. In this process, up to 98% of the NMMO chemicals is re-used for the after batches and the water consumption is also reduced.

The bamboo production process is as follows:

  1. Making Bamboo pulp – Bamboo after being harvested and being cut into small chips are then smashed to create Bamboo pulp.
  2. Preparing – Cellulose is extracted from bamboo and is then combined with NMMO chemicals to create a liquid for the spinning process.
  3. Spinning – Spinning solution is put into a spinneret with a series of tiny holes in high pressure to form fibers. Fibers go through a coagulation bath and washing bath. Then, fibers are finally ready for the yarn spinning process.

Bamboo yarn provided by Greenyarn uses the Siro spinning technology which helps enhance the strength and the evenness of the yarns. This also helps reduce the hairiness of the finished product.

Outstanding advantages and application of Bamboo yarn

Bamboo yarn is a good choice for consumers who are health-conscious and those who have sensitive skin. Studies have shown that Bamboo fabrics do not create allergies and are safe for sensitive skins, even for baby skin. The “bamboo kun” properties in bamboo help deodorize bad smells from body sweats and eliminate bacteria as well as fungus.

Fabrics made from Bamboo yarns are also breathable and are flexible insulation. Bamboo garments can keep the body cool in hot weather and warm during breezy days. Moreover, Bamboo is well known for its UV protection with the ability to resist UV rays up to 98% (UPF 50+). This is the most outstanding advantage of Bamboo yarn because it helps protect human skin from the sun and avoid skin cancer; Therefore, Bamboo fabrics are commonly used for casual wear and especially for workwear.

Another aspect of Bamboo that environmentally-conscious consumer (and supplier) love is that it is biodegradable and renewable. With the help of modern technology, fabrics made of Bamboo yarn can degrade after 5 years. This helps reduce the carbon footprints that the fashion and textiles industry has been leaving on the environment. In addition, growing and harvesting Bamboo do not affect the ecosystem. Bamboo itself is a fast-growing plant and does not need the use of pesticides or any chemicals during the growing process. When the  Bamboo tree is cut down for production, new Bamboo shoots will grow from the soil of the tree, and the new cycle of Bamboo continues.

What is good quality Bamboo yarn?

Standard Bamboo yarn must ensure all of the excellent characteristics of Bamboo such as high UV protection, quick sweat-wicking, deodorant, antibacterial and non-irritating to sensitive skin. Bamboo yarn provided by Greenyarn especially uses the Siro spinning technology that helps enhances the strength and the breathability of Bamboo fabrics.

To differentiate Greenyarn’s standard Bamboo yarn and other Bamboo yarns in the market, we have created the UV Yarntech TAG to ensure that the Bamboo yarn used for the product is qualified. With every order of Greenyarn’s Bamboo yarn, we will provide the UV Yarntech TAG to partners. On each tag, there is a QR code that directs the user to Greenyarn’s UV Yarntech Report webpage. This is where we provide all information about the yarn including the composition of the yarn, where it comes from, and all the certifications related.
