The trend of using sustainable materials in casual wear is currently being focused on and developed by business organizations and the fashion industry. The textile industry brings a lot of profits to the economy, however, it also has a huge impact on nature that is the cause of an increase in the amount of waste.
Plastic waste recycling technology brings new sources of material, especially for textile and fashion industries. Garment made from recycled yarns from plastic is currently a trend developed by many fashion brands. Recycled Staple yarn together with Recycled Filament yarn, and Recycled Melange are the outstanding product lines of this sustainable fashion trend. So let’s find out with Greenyarn what Recycled Staple yarn is.
Recycled yarn is a fairly common term in an era of pollution where plastic waste is a global problem. The yarns in the Recycled Yarn product line have gradually taken their place in the Vietnamese market. Prominent among them are Recycled Staple, Recycled Filament and Recycled Melange. These are yarns made from recycled plastic, which is a breakthrough that opens up a sustainable future for the fashion industry.
These fibers all have the common feature that instead of using completely new materials, Recycled yarns reuse the old plastic bottles, clean and intelligently recycle them to form a new product line. On the other hand, the difference between Recycled yarns lie in their shape:
Recycled Filament yarn consists of one or multi continuous fibers that are twisted together and textured.
Recycled Staple yarn is created from staple fibers and then twisted together.
Recycled Melange includes more than one staple dyed fibers and then mixed to create various color effects.

Recycled Staple yarn is manufactured with complex technology but it brings many environmental benefits. Recycled Staple yarn production process minimizes the impact on the environment as follows:
1. Selection of input materials: Collect post-consumer plastic bottles, non-biodegradable PET/polyester plastic bottles
2. Raw processing: Clean and unlabel the bottles, then chopped into flakes which are cleaned again, and then melted in order to form into chips.
3. Spinning: There are two methods of spinning Recycled polyester from chips after raw processing:
1. Recycled Staple yarn retains most of the characteristics of traditional Spun yarn, which are smooth, good abrasion resistance, and lightweight. Additionally, clothes made from Recycled Staple yarn are resilient, anti-wrinkle, retain their shape well, have high durability, easy to wash, and antibacterial which doesn’t lead to skin irritation.
2. Garment manufacturers often combine Recycled Staple yarn with Cotton yarn to increase moisture absorption, breathability and bring comfortable feelings for daily activities.
3. Recycled Staple yarn applies the latest technology of Top Dyeing known as Fiber Dyeing, meeting most of the quality requirements in apparel.
4. The manufacturer takes advantage of recycled materials to make Recycled Yarn, which helps to reduce landfill and waste to the ocean. At the same time, creating a closed loop of plastic recycling.
5. The Recycled Staple production process does not require any unnecessary exploitation of new oil, reducing the need for new oil depletion. Producing recycled polyester has 55% less CO₂ emissions and consumes 53% less energy than virgin polyesters.
Thanks to owning the superior properties of traditional Spun yarn, Recycled Staple yarn can be used to make garments such as sportswear, outdoor apparel, underwear, socks or interior furnishings.
Because it is a recycled product, the plastic cleaning and manufacturing process is also more demanding than regular clothes. For the product to reach consumers, Recycled Staple yarn must meet the following standards:
1. The product must have GRS/RCS,OEKO-TEX certification.
2. The product must have clear origin information, fabric composition, and a manufacturer with safety certifications.
GRS (Global Recycle Standard) is considered the most complete international product standard to evaluate the following criteria: input recycled material composition, the process of custody of recycled products, limited usage of chemicals and its impacts on society and the environment. The GRS standard is used to define recycled content in the ISO 14021 standard.
Greenyarn’s Recycled Filament yarn is manufactured and processed with the latest technology, meeting GRS standards, committed to the quality of the product for consumers: Completely safe and benign for the user’s skin.
