What is Pineapple yarn? It’s a unique textile made from pineapple leaf fibers, offering numerous outstanding benefits. As Vietnam’s eco-fiber market continues to grow, Ananas pineapple yarn has emerged as a new large-scale production material. This marks the first time Vietnam has succeeded in producing textile fibers from plant-based materials on such a scale, providing an environmentally friendly option sourced from the country’s rich natural resources.

Unlike traditional pineapple leaf fiber, which was primarily reserved for high-end, handcrafted products for the elite, Ananas yarn has opened the door to a greener consumer market. This material stands out not only for its durability and biodegradability but also for the comfort it offers in each product. It represents the evolution of pineapple yarn from a symbol of royalty to a widely accessible, eco-friendly choice.

What is Pineapple Yarn? Who Created It?

Pineapple yarn originates from several tropical countries, most notably the Philippines, where it has thrived for centuries under the name Piña, which comes from Spanish.

For a long time, pineapple fiber has been an integral part of Philippine culture, most clearly represented in the Barong Tagalog shirt—a national garment that embodies national pride. This shirt is made from lightweight, sheer fabric with intricate embroidery, symbolizing elegance and tradition.

Pineapple fiber is not only renowned for its classic beauty but has also attracted global fashion designers due to its excellent natural properties, including softness, sheen, durability, and high aesthetic appeal. Wedding gowns, national costumes, and evening wear are often made from pineapple fiber because of its perfect blend of elegance and tradition.

Why Was Pineapple Fiber Once Reserved for Nobility Before the 19th Century?

The process of producing pineapple fiber is meticulous and labor-intensive, requiring extreme attention to detail. From selecting the best pineapple leaves, extracting the raw fibers, manually processing them into thread, to weaving the fabric—all of these steps require skilled artisans and considerable time. This is a physically demanding task that couldn’t be rushed like modern fabric production processes.

Due to its complexity and the high level of craftsmanship required, the final product was produced in very limited quantities, resulting in a high price. Before the 19th century, pineapple fiber fabric was exclusively for the nobility and upper-class families, symbolizing wealth and royalty. For centuries, pineapple fiber fabric represented luxury and prestige.

However, with the advent of cheaply mass-produced industrial fabrics from the 19th century, particularly under the influence of the Fast Fashion trend, pineapple fiber gradually faded from prominence.

Despite this, the quality and value of pineapple fiber remain unchanged, making it an ideal choice for garments requiring elegance and refinement, such as the Barong Tagalog worn by the Philippine president and given as gifts to foreign dignitaries.

With modern textile technology, mass production of pineapple fiber remains a challenge, until Vietnam introduced its eco-friendly Ananas yarn.

How Is Ananas Yarn Different from Traditional Pineapple Yarn?

Exclusive “Cottonization” Technology Enables Mass Production of Ananas Yarn

Transforming pineapple leaves into textile fibers is not a new concept. However, the biggest challenge lies in converting raw pineapple fiber into ready-to-spin thread on a large scale, something that traditional methods couldn’t achieve.

Many startups in Southeast Asia have failed to overcome this step, as the manual “cottonization” process didn’t produce enough output to supply spinning and weaving factories.

+ The process of producing pineapple fiber from pineapple leaves begins with extracting raw fibers, ensuring they are of uniform length and fineness.

+ Next, the raw fibers are transformed into thread through an exclusive “cottonization” technology that ensures uniform fineness, moisture control, and consistent fiber length. This critical step allows pineapple thread to be used as a spinning material for textile production.

In mid-2021, Bảo Lân Textile partnered with Ecofa to launch the Ananas yarn project in Vietnam, utilizing the exclusive “cottonization” technology invented by young engineer Đậu Văn Nam, founder of Ecofa.

This project underwent three years of trials during the Covid-19 pandemic, and by 2024, the two companies officially announced the first large-scale production of Ananas fiber, fully sourced from Vietnam. This achievement has opened the door for eco-friendly pineapple fiber to be supplied to textile manufacturers, fashion brands, and makers of accessories and home furnishings.

Environmentally Friendly Production Process of Ananas Yarn

The production process of Ananas yarn is designed to be a closed-loop and optimized system, from cultivation to raw fiber processing, large-scale “cottonization” of pineapple threads, spinning, and weaving. Bảo Lân Textile prioritizes environmental sustainability throughout every stage. Specifically:

+100% Natural Materials from Vietnam: Ananas yarn is made from raw, natural pineapple fibers, extracted from leaves harvested from fields across Vietnam.

+Sustainability Controlled from Cultivation: By recycling agricultural waste from pineapple farming, Ecofa, our exclusive pineapple thread production partner, works directly with farmers in provinces such as Điện Biên, Ninh Bình, Thanh Hóa, Nghệ An, and other expanding regions.

+Chemical-Free Fiber Extraction: The process of extracting raw fibers from pineapple leaves is done without the use of bleaching chemicals, preserving the natural properties of the pineapple fiber. After “cottonization,” Ananas yarns maintain their durability, softness, uniform length, and fineness, making them smoother, more elastic, and more durable compared to traditional manual methods.

Thanks to this environmentally friendly and time-efficient production process, Ananas yarn is not only safe for the skin, especially for those with sensitive skin, but also meets high standards of quality and sustainability for consumers.

Superior Features of Ananas yarn with Trusted Certifications

Ananas yarn from Bảo Lân Textile has been certified by reputable organizations, including the Ho Chi Minh City Textile Research Institute (VTRSI-TTC) and the Nissenken Quality Evaluation Center (Japan), distinguishing it from traditional handmade pineapple fibers that lack third-party certification.
