Have you ever thought of one day you’ll be wearing a shirt made of the coffee grounds that you drink every morning? Research shows that there are 2,25 billion coffee cups are consumed every morning with roughly 9 million tons of coffee grounds going to waste. Luckily, with the development of technology in the textile industry, those coffee grounds now become a new source of material.
Coffee yarn (S.Cafe yarn) was first introduced to the textiles industry by Singtex – one of the most prominent fabric manufacturers in Taiwan. Coffee grounds are combined with a polymer mixture to create a blend, the S.Cafe patent process will then be applied to create coffee yarn. The combination between coffee and polymer enhances and improves the characteristics of recycled polyester yarns. Fabrics made from Coffee yarn are 200% better moisture-wicking compared to Cotton fabrics. In addition, the S.Cafe yarn has been gaining a lot of attention and demand for its UV protection, odor control, quick drying ability, and especially for the ice cool touch (S.Café ICE-CAFÉ™).
Approximately, for every 03 cups of coffee and 05 plastic bottles, a shirt will be made. Choosing S.Cafe Coffee yarn is a more eco-friendly alternative for your business because wastage like coffee grounds and plastics are now granted a new life cycle. During the S.Cafe patent process, it is said to produce less CO2 emission and is more energy-saving compared to traditional textiles processes.
1. Cleaning – Coffee grounds are cleaned to extract the oils (the oils will then be used in cosmetics), the balance will be ground to micro or nano sizes
2. Making Masterbatches – Applying S. Café® technology with a low-temperature, high-pressure and energy-saving process. This technology combines coffee grounds and polymer to create a spinning solution.
3. Fiber creation – Spinning solution is extruded through spinneret with a series of tiny holes to form fibers.
4. Yarn creation – After washing, fibers are put to a spinning machinery system to create S.Cafe Coffee yarn.
There is a household tip that coffee works great as a deodorizer for the refrigerator as it will absorb all the bad smells in the fridge. This also works when coffee (grounds) are used to produce fabrics. The nano coffee compounds in Coffee yarn will help to eliminate bad odors of the wearer, making the body always feel fresh and comfortable.
Additionally, coffee grounds come with numerous microscopic pores which create a long-lasting, natural and chemical-free shield for the yarn. This makes Coffee yarn UV-resistant and can protect human skin from the sun naturally.
With such advantages, S.Cafe Coffee yarn is a wonderful choice for sportswear, underwear, socks, bedding, etc.
Coffee yarn is developed and licensed by Singtex company under the name S.Cafe. Singtex is also a partner of Greenyarn. We have worked with Singtex for years to bring this amazingly sustainable yarn to the Vietnam textiles market.
Standard Coffee yarn or S.Cafe yarn must ensure the permanent outstanding functions of the Coffee yarn such as odor control, moisture-wicking, fast-drying, and UV-resistant.
Greenyarn provides large quantities of S.Cafe yarn by Singtex and many other yarns to weavers, tailors, fashion designers, or small quantities to individual clients to help these sustainable materials be accessible to everyone, contributing to the development of sustainable fashion in Vietnam.
