What is Modal yarn?

Although Vietnam consumers are too familiar with biological textiles and fabrics such as Tencel yarn, Bamboo yarn, Cotton yarn, silk, etc… The modal yarn is still quite new compared to the history of garments in our country because of its origin and composition. The Modal fibers could only be produced from oak wood in Northern European countries and America…

Modal yarn with the source is beech wood, has high cellulose content, does not use pesticides, creating a benign and safe bio-fiber for the skin. Whereas the modal yarn has been used in apparel since the 60s in European and American countries, it has only been introduced into our country a few years ago. Despite that, Modal is still the first choice of green and environmentally friendly consumption trends.

Modal yarn production process

The production process of oak modal yarn has many changes, which are increasingly being upgraded to enhance durability and overcome the limitations of the traditional production process:

1. Selection of input materials: Harvesting beech wood, crushing them, and extract cellulose.

2. Preparation: After a few stages of chemical treatment, a spinning solution is created from cellulose which is ready for the following steps.

3. Fibers production: The spinning solution is extruded through a series of tiny holes on spinneret to form fibers. Fibers are soaked in sulfuric acid to coagulate and washed accordingly.

4. Yarns production: Modal fibers are twisted together to create yarns.

1. Modal yarns have breathability, good absorbency, and can absorb water 50% higher than cotton yarn. These properties help it quickly wick away moisture, bringing a pleasant feeling to users.

2. With high cellulose content, Modal yarn has high durability, resistance to abrasion. On account of those properties, fabrics from Modal yarns withstand shrinkage when washing, keeping the form standing, making the clothes not wrinkled.

4. Modal yarn applies the technology of Top Dyeing and Fiber Dyeing to solve the problems of uneven color on fabric. In addition, even after being washed many times, the quality of the fabric is still quite new.

5. Modal yarn is made from renewable materials, the production process uses less chemicals than other viscose yarns which is less polluted, not only safe for the environment but also friendly to human skin that does not cause irritation.

Upon the soft nature, the applications of Modal yarns are incredibly diverse, which can be used in house furnishings such as bed sheets, towels, bathrobes, etc…
In the fashion industry, Modal fabric is often used for products such as pants, uniforms, coats, underwear, dresses.
